For about $230, you can buy yourself a P-90 pickup equipped Squier Telecaster Custom II. Its got alot of bang for the buck.

Also, try checking out Epiphone Les Pauls. There are plenty in your price range. The Gibson Melody Maker sells for $380 at musiciansfriend.com, so if you have the money, I’d recommend that.

I’ve included links to the aforementioned music store below, all containing each of the items I talked about.

Get an Epiphone SG-400 (lighter than an LP) or a Fender Squier Standard “Fat Strat” or HSS – they’re both quality instruments you can play forever. They’re both versatile enough to play any type of music.

You could get yourself a nice Fender Strat in that 400 range. It wont be the Standard, but Fender makes a line of guitars in that range that you will not outgrow in a year. Ibanez is also a nice axe, as is Epiphone in that price range. Since you are considering spending 400, forget about 250. The extra bucks will pay off for you in the long haul.
