Probably your dad's guitars are dreadnought size--it's pretty popular. My sister has a Mexican or Spanish guitar , almost as small as some electrics, though a little thicker-bodied. That was a good size to start with. I'd advise you start on an acoustic. It's slightly easier, because you're not messing with the tuning or anything. Also, an acoustic is a better starting guitar because you can't improve your sound with the amp and effects. You have to actually learn to play well. Once you know how to play, you'll be alot better on an electric (if you decide to go that way) than you would be starting on an electric and maybe faking your way through things you couldn't figure out right away. If your dad's acoustic guitars are really too big for you to reach the fretboard properly, you'll have to either use a capo all the time or start on electric. If it's just that the body of the guitar feels too big and uncomfortable under your arm, use one with a strap and play standing up. That's how I got started.
